South Lakelands 600th affordable home was opened today by South Lakes Housing in Windermere
The home was part of a development at School Knott, a stones throw from Windermere’s recreation grounds, Queens Park. The houses will be socially rented to those on the waiting list through South Lakes Housing which was set up as the housing arm of South Lakeland District Council and now acts autonomously after all Council homes were transferred to their ownership.
Commenting Ben said “What is absolutely fantastic is that this house is going to a local hard working family. I used to work with Vicki when I was stacking shelves at the local supermarket and I cant think of a nicer person for this home to go to.
What makes schemes like this truly affordable is that generally the homes are rented out at reduced rates. Young people like me struggle to get a mortgage so to have an opportunity for a fantastic new home like this is amazing. What is a shame is that with the Council no longer owning it, there wont be the option of Right to Buy, stripping the chance of many striving people of a hand up to home ownership.”
