Today (18 July), Windermere councillor Ben Berry, Royalty Cinema manager Charles Morris, Mark Latimer of  the Furness Theatre Organ Project and local campaigner Jane Hoyle,  presented their petition demanding the council remove the Royalty Cinema in Bowness from a list of sites it has put forward to the Lake District National Park Authority for redevelopment.

The petition, which has more than 400 signatures, was presented before a crunch meeting this afternoon when the council’s cabinet will meet to approve its formal submission to the National’s Park’s consultation on the area’s new Local Plan, which identifies sites where redevelopment can take place over the next 15-years.

Councillor Ben Berry said: “The petition firmly puts the ball in the council’s court.

“The council let the cat out of the bag this month when it conceded that the future of the cinema was at risk by scrabbling together a last-minute promise to give it a special designation in the future.

“The only way to guarantee the future of the Royalty Cinema is for the council to use its meeting today to formally withdraw the site from the National Park’s development plan.”
