A leading Lib Dem stepped down today from South Lakeland District Council
Hilary Stephenson, member for Windermere Bowness North, resigned from SLDC today only weeks after her husband became Deputy Leader of the County Council. Hilary led the District Council after the passing of Cllr Brendan Jamerson in March 2012.
SLDC Conservative group leader David Williams said he “wasn’t surprised” at the move because of her “appalling attendance level” since losing a leadership contest in May 2012. He went on to say “Hilary had made it clear in the last eighteen months that she was no longer interested in serving the residents of Windermere and Bowness, attending little more than one in three meetings, but she has shown courage in now stepping down.”
Windermere Councillor Ben Berry thanked her for her work over the years saying “A lot of hard work goes into being a Councillor and I’m sure this wasn’t an easy decision to make. I would like to thank Hilary for her time and for letting the people of Windermere Bowness South have another say in who represents them on SLDC.”
A by-election is expected to be called.
