Sam the dog from the Low Wood Hotel came to visit the Lake District Calvert Trust bringing with him a cheque for £6000 in support of the work at the Centre. The money was raised through soft cuddly versions of Sam being sold throughout the English Lakes Hotels Resorts and Venues. Sam is a big cuddly dog who has entertained children of all ages at English Lakes for many years now through Sam’s Club, their exciting children’s activity club.
£1000 of the money will be put towards purchasing new outdoor equipment specifically for small children and the remaining £5000 would provide a bursary fund for family holidays. This fantastic support will enable even the most profoundly disabled individuals to explore our environment, have new sensory experiences, and take to terrain that they never thought possible alongside their family.
Families visiting the Centre do so for a variety of reasons. We have had a number of families comment that to experience activities together at the centre is one of the most important reasons for them to visit the Calvert Trust. Most say that on other family holidays they have felt that often the person with the disability is left out.
“The Calvert Trust has always been a breath of fresh air for us as a family- a place where obstacles to doing something aren’t seen as problems but a chance to work out a solution.”
The Miles Family
The Tylee family were given some support towards the cost of their visit through bursary money and commented:
“Being able to all enjoy challenging outdoor activities together is a first for us…and the bursary has made a huge difference – we wouldn’t have been able to book a holiday without it.”
Ben Berry representative from English Lakes Hotel said, “We are absolutely delighted to be giving money to the Calvert Trust- it’s wonderful work that they are doing and we are honoured to support it”
The Lake District Calvert Trust, based on Bassenthwaite Lake is an outdoor centre specializing in working with people with disabilities and provides multi-activity breaks for families, groups and individuals. The family breaks provide families with an opportunity to try out activities with other families, their friends and carers taught by qualified and experienced instructors. After a day of activities families have the chance to relax in the state of the art hydrotherapy pool, sensory room or enjoy time with other families in the games room and at the weekly disco/social.
The money from English Lakes Hotels will be vital in supporting families financially so they can experience one of the Lake District Calvert Trust’s truly life-changing courses.
