Windermere goes blue for Berry

For the first time since 1988 Windermere has returned a Conservative County Councillor. Ben Berry was elected by residents of Windermere with a majority of 88 votes after a jump in turnout from previous elections.

Ben thanked residents saying:

“I pay tribute to all those who voted especially those who saw me fit to serve them as County Councillor. It is an honour to serve my home town and I look forward to delivering action.”

The swing to the Conservatives was attributed to three factors:

  • Theresa May’s significant popularity

  • Ben’s local record and commitment, notably helping to deliver the Christmas Market

  • The Lib Dem’s derogatory views of those who voted to Leave the European Union

The gain for the Conservatives came amongst several wins across Cumbria and the Country. Leader of Cumbria Conservatives is the Parliamentary Candidate James Airey who hailed Ben’s victory. James Airey has been campaigning in Windermere with Ben for many years and spoke after Ben’s historic win saying “Ben is a real community champion and the people of Windermere can do no better. Ben has worked very hard for Windermere and I know he has great plans to make it an even better place.”

The full results were:

Conservative Ben Berry – 1097

Liberal Democrats – 1009

Labour – 124

Green – 58
